Prove It
The Day My Degree Wasn’t Enough—and Why I’m Grateful
I had just moved back to the U.S. after living in Japan with my husband, Jeremy, a naval aviator stationed overseas. It was a season of change. We were transitioning, starting over, and I was looking to rebuild my career while Jeremy prepared for his next deployment—three years away, back in Japan.
I was armed with a freshly earned Bachelor’s Degree in Accountancy and a fierce determination to contribute. I’d worked hard, sacrificed, and believed the doors would open.
Then I walked into the nut farm.
Not just any nut farm—an actual pistachio processing facility in Hanford, California. I lovingly referred to it as the nut farm because, honestly, the entire situation felt a little crazy. They were hiring a part-time AR clerk to help “clean things up.”
I applied.
I interviewed.
And I got told:
“We’re not sure you’re qualified. You’ll need to prove it.”
I had the degree. I had the work ethic. But apparently, that wasn’t enough.
And that moment? It lit a fire in me.
Instead of letting that rejection stall me, I found a new lane. I joined forces with fellow Navy wives and co-founded a fashion company called Homecoming Trunk Shows. We had heart, hustle, and no roadmap—but we believed in showing up for women like us, living in constant transition, chasing purpose wherever we landed.
They gave me the title Accounting Manager, and I went to work.
I built systems, tracked margins, balanced our books, and learned how to lead a company’s finances from the ground up—while balancing life, starting our family, and time zones.
And I wasn’t done.
That same year, I enrolled in a Master’s Degree program in Accountancy, finished it in 9 months, and graduated with a 3.9 GPA.
